Salem man arrested for murder in connection to northeast Salem shooting last month

A Salem man has been charged with murder after he allegedly shot and killed a Woodburn man in late January.

Eduardo Flores-Rodriguez, 21, was found dead from a gunshot wound in a car on Northeast Snoopy Lane and Linus Court on Jan. 21, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

Six days later, Martin Steven Kirk-Varela, 26, was taken into custody on a parole violation. He pleaded guilty to second-degree assault in 2014.

On Thursday, Kirk-Varela was charged with second-degree murder with a firearm, first-degree attempted murder with a firearm, second-degree assault with a firearm, being a felon in possession of a firearm and body armor, and methamphetamine possession.

The Marion County District Attorney’s Office said Kirk-Varela attempted to cause the death of other victims.

The sheriff’s office said two other men showed up at Salem Health the night of the shooting with gunshot wounds. Both were treated and released.

Kirk-Varela’s arraignment is on Friday, Feb. 14.

Any person with information about shooting is being asked to call Detective Nancy Serrano at 503-316-6635.
