A police SWAT team searched a northeast Salem home Friday afternoon and arrested a 23-year-old man accused of killing one man and wounding another in a shooting at a homeless encampment at Wallace Marine Park.
Arlie C. Thompson of Salem was arrested and will be booked into the Polk County Jail on charges of second-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and unlawful use of a weapon, the Salem Police Department said in a statement.
The charges allege that Thompson fatally shot Charley A. Hodges, 29, and injured a 25-year-old man just after 3 a.m. on Thursday. The police statement did not explain the kidnapping charge.
Polk County District Attorney Aaron Felton declined to say whether Thompson lived at the home where he was arrested or in the encampment at the west Salem Park due to a pending criminal case.
A Salem police SWAT team searched a home in the 4800 block of Northeast Northstar Court near Hayesville based on a warrant around 3:15 p.m. on Friday. They arrested Thompson without incident, according to the statement.
State court records showed no criminal history for Thompson.
A GoFundMe is available to raise money for Hodges’ funeral expenses and to help loved ones travel to the ceremony.
