UPDATES: South Salem baseball champs to reunite

A man was arrested and charged with second-degree attempted murder after police say he shot his son Wednesday night southeast Salem and fled to the Albany area.

Timothy Quantrell Brewer Sr., 42, of Salem was charged with second-degree attempted murder, first-degree assault, unlawful use of a firearm and possessing a firearm as a felon, the Salem Police Department said in a news release Thursday afternoon.

Around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday, Salem officers responded to a call reporting a person with a gunshot wound at an apartment in the 5500 block of Woodside Drive Southeast.

Police found his son, Timothy Quantrell Brewer Jr., with a gunshot wound, according to the news release. Paramedics transported the son to Salem Hospital, where he is was on a life-support system as of Thursday afternoon.

Salem detectives determined "a dispute" between the two resulted in Brewer Sr. shooting Brewer Jr. before fleeing.

The news release said Brewer Sr. was currently lodged at the Marion County Jail and due to be arraigned Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Marion County Circuit Court Annex, though the jail's roster didn't list him as being in custody around 5 p.m. Thursday.

Salem's premier chamber music group will hold two performances this weekend to raise funds for medical supplies and relief for Ukraine.

The Willamette Master Chorus will perform "Songs of Perseverance," a spring concert, at 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Hudson Hall on the Willamette University campus.

"Guest soloist Anton Belov will lead the chorus in a Ukrainian folk song and their national anthem," a press release from the chorus said.

The chorus will also perform African American spirituals and "A Jubilant Day" by Portland composer Judy Rose. The centerpiece song is "Song of the Salish Chief" by British Columbian composer Peter Bjerring.

"This concert piece highlights the challenges and joys of growing up a part of the Salish tribe and will include a small instrumental flute, piano, bass, and percussion ensemble," the press release said.

The chorus will donate 10% of ticket sales to Accent Network, a Portland organization providing medical supplies and aid to Ukraine and surrounding areas.

Salem residents Thursday night can partake in an open mic and listen to a poetry manuscript prepared by an award-winning writer for publishing.

The virtual event, hosted by the Salem Poetry Project, will feature Mike Shuler, a writer of poetry, stories and songs who has been an active member of the Mid-Valley Poetry Society for around a decade.

Shuler's writing has appeared in Northwest Passage, Calapooia Collage, Appalachian Magazine, Perceptions, Terra Incognita and other publications, and he was previously awarded a North Carolina state poetry. His chapbook, “Words on Wind,” was published in 2015.

He prepared a poetry manuscript for publishing and will read from it at the event.

The Salem Poetry Project each week presents a featured reader followed by the "Infamous Open Mic," with three poems or five minutes - whichever is first.

The featured reader starts at 7:00 and the open mic will follow directly after.

Former South Salem High School baseball players who won the school a state championship three decades ago will reunite Saturday.

The 1991 Saxon championship team will sign autographs at Gilmore Field Saturday from noon to 5 p.m., according to an email from Neil Johnson, one of the former players who's helping organize the event.

The Saxon Baseball Foundation will honor the 1991 squad, including head coach Terry Augen and assistant coaches Matt Boring, Pete Hoffert and Tony Sterns.

Johnson said his former teammates are traveling from Tennessee, Texas, Nevada and Washington to attend the event.

The 1991 team will cheer on the current Saxon team taking on Bend High School in a doubleheader, with games at noon and 2 p.m.
