Marion County residents next month can adopt a dog for $25 or less as animal shelters in Oregon and across the U.S. face overcrowding.

Adoption fees at Marion County Dog Services, the county-run dog shelter, will be reduced May 2 – 8 through the national “Empty the Shelters” event, sponsored by the BISSELL Pet Foundation.

The Salem shelter currently lists dogs available for adoption as ranging from $125 to $350. It’s located at 3550 Aumsville Hwy S.E.

“Shelters across the country are over capacity, and highly adoptable pets are at risk as we face one of the largest crises in recent years,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation, in a press release. “BISSELL Pet Foundation is calling on people to visit their community shelters during ‘Empty the Shelters’ to save a life through adoption. Without you, there is no tomorrow for these deserving pets.”

More than 275 shelters in 45 states are participating in the event, which has helped more than 83,000 pets get adopted from shelters nationwide, according to the press release.
