A man found dead in a car Friday evening in east Salem died of gunshot wounds, an autopsy determined.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office disclosed the cause of death in a news release Tuesday and identified the victim as 37-year-old Roberto Gorie of Salem.

The announcement came a day after sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Jeremy Landers said the autopsy Saturday morning ruled the manner of death a homicide.

Around 7:22 p.m. Friday, a 911 caller reported a crash in a residential area of unincorporated east Salem.

Deputies and emergency services personnel responded and found a black Honda Civic “on its top” on Northeast Vernon Street near Herrin Road, according to an earlier news release issued the day of the shooting.

The only person in the car had “suspicious injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said.

Nobody has been arrested in the shooting. The sheriff’s office said Tuesday morning they are still pursuing investigative leads.

They asked anyone who may have information about the shooting to call Detective Jessica Van Horn at 503-584-6211 or submit an anonymous tip by texting TIPMCSO and a tip to 847411.
