Data digest: Covid by the numbers for Jan. 24, 2022

A screengrab of the number of patients hospitalized with Covid in the region that covers Marion, Polk, Linn, Lincoln, Benton and Yamhill counties.

As Covid hospitalizations continue to rise again due to the omicron variant, Salem Reporter is again publishing case and hospitalization information daily. Here’s our report for Monday, Jan. 24.

Salem Hospital has 109 patients hospitalized with Covid as of Monday morning, close to a Sept. 6 peak of 112 patients during the delta wave.

Monday’s case counts are typically higher because they include numbers from the weekend.

Total Salem Hospital patients with Covid: 109 as of Monday morning, an increase of nine from Sunday.

Of those, six are in the intensive care unit, and two are on ventilators.

Sixty of those in the hospital are not vaccinated against Covid, and 49 are vaccinated.

Note: Salem Health does not consistently report the number of patients who have received a booster vaccine dose because of the difficulty tracking whether patients are eligible for a booster in real time, spokeswoman Lisa Wood said. The vaccinated patient count includes any patient who has received at least two doses of a Moderna or Pfizer vaccine, or the one-shot Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

Total Salem Hospital bed occupancy: 496; the hospital is licensed for 494 beds.

The hospital is able to care for more patients than licensed because of federal emergency waivers tied to the pandemic.

Total people hospitalized with Covid in Region 2 (Marion, Polk, Yamhill, Linn, Benton, Lincoln counties): 186. Of those, 14 are in the intensive care unit and four are on ventilators.

Total Region 2 hospital bed occupancy: 81 of 85 staffed ICU beds and 546 of 557 non-ICU beds in use.

New Covid cases reported in Marion County: 1,940

New Covid cases reported in Polk County: 425

New Covid deaths reported: 17 in Oregon

Correction: Salem Reporter inadvertently listed an earlier day’s hospital bed occupancy in Monday’s report. The correct number is 496 inpatients, not 531. We apologize for the error.
