Salem man dies after Thursday crash

A Salem man died after a crash on Highway 22 west Thursday night.

Oregon State Police and emergency personnel responded around 5:56 p.m. to a two-car, head-on crash on Highway 22 west near milepost 17, according to a Friday news release.

Police determined that James Marvin Dougherty, 83 of Salem, was driving a Toyota Avalon westbound in the eastbound lanes and “collided head-on” with an eastbound Honda Element driven by Samuel James Clark, 50 of Salem.

Both drivers were transported to a local hospital with serious injuries, and Dougherty was later pronounced dead at the hospital, the news release said.

Police closed eastbound lanes of Highway 22 west for around three hours.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office, Dallas Fire and Medics, and the Oregon Department of Transportation helped respond to the crash.
