One dead, one hospitalized in Salem shooting

Salem police are investigating a shooting in southeast Salem that left one man dead and a woman injured.

Lt. Treven Upkes of the Salem Police Department said police were summoned to a home on Southeast Polo Court just before 1 p.m. Tuesday. The street is located north of Highway 22 and west of Southeast Cordon Road.

They encountered a woman outside with what Upkes said were “non-life threatening” injuries who directed them into the home. There, officers found a man dead from an apparent gunshot.

The woman was taken to Salem Health for treatment but information about her condition wasn’t immediately available.

Upkes said late Tuesday that officers hadn’t determined whether the death was a murder, but they believe there is no danger to the public.

He said the identity of the victims would be released after their relatives had been notified.
