Western Oregon University will hold most of its spring quarter classes online at its Monmouth and Salem campuses.

“We had hoped to be able to offer more in-person classes for spring, but the COVID-19 metrics and current safety protocols have led us to this decision,” said university President Rex Fuller in a news release.

Some art and science labs will be available in person, the statement said. Tuition rates will remain the same.

The university is in Monmouth and has a small campus in downtown Salem, which opened last year. The Salem campus offers several master’s degree programs and a bachelor’s degree completion program designed for working adults.

In December, Fuller announced the university would cut some major programs including anthropology, geography and philosophy and lay off faculty to save money in the face of declining enrollment.

The university’s spring term begins March 29.
