Outrage over the death of George Floyd, a Minneapolis man who died at the hands of police, continued to simmer in Salem as well as cities across the country throughout the weekend.

On Saturday a demonstration in Salem became confrontational with people in the crowd throwing objects at officers and property left damaged. Salem City Manager Steve Powers issued a state of emergency and a curfew on Saturday night. On Sunday, protesters again gathered on the steps of the Capitol to wave signs. A second protect protest continued into the night, triggering the city to reinstate a curfew that had been canceled just hours earlier. Another protest is scheduled for tonight, June 1.  – Jake Thomas
