The national Journalism Education Association recognized student journalists at South Salem High School with a 2022 press freedom award.

South was one of 17 schools across the U.S. recognized last week as part of Student Press Freedom Day. It’s the third time the school has won.

“The award recognizes private and public high schools that actively support, teach and protect First Amendment rights and responsibilities of students and teachers, with an emphasis on student-run media where students make all final decisions of content,” the association said on its website.

To be considered, the school submitted statements from student editors, staff advisors and the school principal detailing their support for student-run media and the First Amendment.

South runs a broadcast journalism program for students and publishes a student newspaper, The Clypian.

South previously won the award in 2019, becoming the first Oregon school to be recognized, according to the Salem-Keizer School District.
