Police are asking for the public’s help find the family of a man who was found unconscious Thursday night on a northeast Salem road after a crash.

Officers responded around 9 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, to a report of a man lying on the sidewalk next to a bicycle in the 3600 block of Northeast Portland Road.

Police found Juan Martinez Barron, 61, unconscious near the intersection of Portland Road and Northeast Northgate Avenue with an injury to his head, the Salem Police Department said in a news release Saturday afternoon.

Barron was taken to Salem Hospital, where he remained in critical condition as of Saturday afternoon.

Investigators learned that Barron frequents a homeless camp in the area of Hyacinth Avenue and Northeast Claxter Court. He has recently been seen riding his green and black mountain bike pulling a small utility trailer.

“Efforts have been unsuccessful, however, to locate a family member in the area to notify them of Mr. Barron’s accident and life-threatening medical status,” according to the news release.

Salem police in the statement asked the public to provide any information that would help them contact a family member. Anyone who knows Barron’s family or has a way to contact them was asked to call the Salem Police Tips Line at 503-588-8477.
