Salem-area teachers can win $1,000 for projects, field trips

Local teachers who want to take on a special project or get new equipment for their classrooms could get help from a local credit union.

The Maps Community Foundation, the charitable arm of Maps Credit Union, has opened applications for its annual teacher grants.

Public or private school teachers in Marion and Polk county can apply to get $1,000 toward a classroom or schoolwide project, technology need, after-school club or field trip. Applications are open through 5 p.m. Oct. 31, and 25 winners will be selected.

“The Teacher Grant program is one way Maps honors its roots as an educators’ credit union,” says Kim Hanson, Maps Community Foundation executive director, in a statement. “We are so inspired by the dedication of our local teachers and it is an honor to fund the projects that they know will make a difference each year.”

In 2021, the awards supported projects including purchasing a gel electrophoresis machine for students at North Salem High School to learn forensic science by analyzing DNA, ukeleles for a club at Chavez Elementary School, and college field trips for McKay High School students in the Achievement Via Individual Determination program.
