Workers earning minimum wage in Marion and Polk counties will see an increase of 75 cents an hour beginning Friday, July 1.
The increase in minimum wage, dictated by a 2016 decision by Oregon lawmakers, is dependent on location.
Workers in the Portland metro area which includes parts of Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington counties will earn $14 an hour. Workers in “standard” areas including Benton, Clatsop, Columbia, Deschutes, Hood River, Jackson, Josephine, Lane, Lincoln, Linn, Marion, Polk, Tillamook, Wasco and Yamhill will jump to $12.75. Both increases represent 75 cents per hour difference from the current minimum wage.
Non-urban areas will increase the minimum wage to $12 an hour – a 50-cent increase from the current rate.
“Oregon’s minimum wage increase is more important than ever this year as people work to stay afloat with increasing national costs,” said Labor Commissioner Val Hoyle in a news release.
The rate increases represent the sixth yearly increase since 2016 and are final pre-determined increases in law, according to a statement released from BOLI. Next year, minimum wage rates will automatically be indexed to inflation based on the Consumer Price Index – a figure published by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that measures the average change over time in the price consumers pay for goods and services.
