A protest planned for Wednesday in Salem will be one of more than a dozen demonstrations across the country calling for accountability in the death of Evan Seyfried, a former employee of Kroger in Ohio.

Fred Meyer is subsidiary of Kroger.

Seyfried died by suicide a year ago on March 9, 2021 “after enduring a debilitating six-month campaign of psychological abuse at work,” according to a press release.

The protest is planned for noon to 1 p.m. at the Oregon State Capitol at 900 Court Street N.E. Demonstrations will be held the same day in other cities including Cincinnati, Washington, D.C. and Boston.

He worked for 20 years at Kroger, which operates supermarkets and department stores around the U.S.

Seyfried worked in Milford, Ohio and internally reported his coworkers’ behavior.

“Kroger made no attempt to shield Evan from the incessant mental torment he was subjected to, nor did they make any attempt to investigate the hostile work environment,” the press release said. “Kroger has yet to address Evan’s death or discipline the employees responsible for it.”

Seyfried’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Kroger.

“We are here to raise public awareness of the systemic psychological abuse that occurs in Kroger stores. We are here to hold Kroger accountable and liable for the death of Evan Seyfried,” a flyer for the Salem protest said.
