AGENDA: Salem-Keizer School Board to appoint two new Budget Committee members

The Salem-Keizer School Board will appoint two new members to its Budget Committee at a meeting Tuesday evening.

AGENDA

Five people submitted applications to serve on the Budget Committee, which makes recommendations to the school board for its annual operating budget. The committee includes seven community volunteers as well as all seven elected school board members. Applicants were:

-M. Stephen Boston, a retired educator and principal with 45 years of experience in education

-Joseph Gillis, who served on the Keizer Budget Committee for 10 years and manages “multi-million dollar project budgets as a project manager,” according to his application.

-Rick Kimball, who served on the Salem-Keizer School Board and Budget Committee from 2005-2017

-Nancy MacMorris, who served eight years on the Salem-Keizer School Board and Budget Committee, and is a retired certified nurse midwife.

-Kara Million, current senior accountant and payroll specialist at First Federal Savings & Loan of McMinnville, former executive administrative assistant and accounting manager for Jet Industries in Salem.

The school board’s agenda also included a written report by its Community Bond Oversight Committee, which was created in fall 2018 to monitor projects and the budget for a $619.7 million bond that Salem and Keizer voters approved that May.

Of that, $491.5 million has been spent on construction projects, including construction that started summer 2021 at West Salem High School and Sprague High School, and construction that mostly concluded at McKay High School and South Salem High Schools before the start of school this past fall.

The virtual meeting starts at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 8. It is open to the public, and members of the public can sign up for in-person public comment before the meeting starts.
