Deputies are investigating a homicide in east Salem after finding a person dead in a car Friday evening.

Around 7:22 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 25 a 911 caller reported a crash in a residential area of unincorporated east Salem.

Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputies and emergency services personnel responded and found a black Honda Civic “on its top” on Northeast Vernon Street near Herrin Road, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The only person in the car had “suspicious injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said.

An autopsy Saturday morning ruled the death a homicide, according to Sgt. Jeremy Landers, sheriff’s office spokesman. He said he did not immediately have more information about the circumstances of the death.

The sheriff’s office in the news release asked anyone who may have information to call its tip line at 503-540-8079 or submit a tip by texting TIPMCSO and their tip to 847411.
