The Oregon State Capitol Foundation wants to get students and adults more involved in their government.

The foundation is awarding up to $50,000 in grants for new or existing civics education programs as part of its new Civics Education Initiative, according to a news release.

The funds can be used to expand existing civics education programs, support travel costs for groups to visit the Capitol, develop or promote exhibits about Capitol history and local government or conduct academic research, among other uses.

“Since this program is new, we expect to receive a variety of creative responses. We invite educators, advocates and academics to apply for funding,” said Judy Hall, Capitol Foundation board chair in a statement.

Hall said the foundation will evaluate applications based on how well they align with the organization’s mission “to preserve our Capitol, share its history and engage Oregonians in our democracy.”

Applications are due by March 31, with first awards announced by May 15.
