Fourth grade students at Chapman Hill Elementary School in Salem drew portraits of the district's school board directors for School Board Appreciation Month in 2022.
Members of the Salem-Keizer School Board got a special treat recently - a portrait hand-drawn by local fourth grade students.
It's the second year the district has commemorated School Board Appreciation Month in January by asking elementary school students to render board members in colorful works of art. Students worked using board directors' headshots for reference.
Superintendent Christy Perry presented the portraits to board members during a Jan. 25 work session, adding a bit of levity to an otherwise serious meeting focused on staffing shortages.
"I like the five o'clock shadow that they gave him," Marty Heyen said of Satya Chandragiri's portrait.
Board directors commented on the students' attention to detail, with Maria Hinojos Pressey complimenting the students for accurately rendering her septum piercing, and Danielle Bethell for capturing her deep green eyes.
"These kids really do have an eye for details," Hinojos Pressey said.
The art project drew on the talents of Chapman Hill Elementary School students in Lacey Russell and Karen Stanerson's classes. Board members and student advisor Grace Caldwell will receive their portraits to display at home.
