SALEM HISTORY: Two Oregon governors and a mystery man ring the bell for Salvation Army

(WHC Collections 1998.024.0002)

Editor’s note: This column is part of an effort from Salem Reporter to highlight local history in collaboration with area historians and historical organizations.

Former Governors Charles Arthur Sprague and Douglas McKay (left and center) get into the holiday spirit ringing for the Salvation Army Christmas kettle outside Lipman and Wolfe’s department store in downtown Salem with another unknown gentleman (far right).

Lipman and Wolfe’s Department store stood at the southwest corner of Chemeketa and Liberty Streets in Salem.

The store opened in Salem in September 1954, and McKay died in June 1959. Given the holiday content, the photo must have been taken sometime between 1954 and 1958.

Do you recognize the unknown gentleman pictured at the far right? Please let Kylie Pine at the Willamette Heritage Center know. [email protected], 503-585-7012.

Salem Reporter will publish any updates in a future column.
