Sheriff’s Office investigating Saturday morning crash that killed Salem man

A Salem man died early Saturday morning after driving off Joseph Street southeast in a crash that remains under investigation by the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

A 911 caller around 3:19 a.m. Saturday reported a serious crash on Joseph Street southeast near Highway 22, just east of Salem, according to a Monday news release.

Deputies learned that one car, a silver Toyota Camry, was involved in the crash.

The driver, Enrique Smith, 23 of Salem, was pronounced dead at the scene. No passengers were in the car.

Investigators found that Smith was driving east on Joseph Street “before leaving the roadway for an unknown reason,” the news release said. Deputies haven’t determined if speed or weather contributed to the crash.

Sgt. Jeremy Landers, spokesman for the sheriff’s office, said they are still investigating the scene of the crash and that he did not have information about specific objects the Toyota hit.
