Bicyclist struck, killed by semi-truck Friday night in Salem

A bicyclist died after being struck by a semi-truck in Salem on Friday night.

The Salem Police Department and Salem Fire Department responded around 7:50 p.m. Friday to a report of a crash between a vehicle and a bicyclist at the intersection of Salem Parkway and Cherry Avenue Northeast, according to a Saturday news release from Salem police.

Officers determined a semi-truck and trailer driven by Montaque Annear, 55, of Dallas, had struck and killed a man riding his bicycle.

The Salem Police Traffic Team investigated the crash and found that Annear was traveling southwest on Salem Parkway with a green light when the bicyclist rode northbound through the intersection at Cherry Avenue and was hit.

Annear stopped, stayed at the scene and cooperated with the investigation. A safety inspection of the truck found no violations, the news release said.

Salem police didn’t make any arrests or issue citations. Police have identified the cyclist and will release his name after they notify next of kin.

His death marked the sixth fatal pedestrian or cyclist crash in Salem this year, the news release said.

The department said Friday night that Salem Parkway would be closed at Cherry Avenue Northeast for at least three hours due to the crash.
