S’mores are back in Oregon’s parks and forests.

The state Department of Forestry on Friday lifted a blanket ban on campfires in state parks and forests east of Interstate 5, which had been in place to prevent wildfires.

Individual park and forest managers may still restrict campfires at specific locations depending on local fire danger.

Recent rains and cooler temperatures have dampened fire danger in many parts of the state, and this decision allows local forest and park managers to make decisions about fire restrictions based on conditions in their area,” the Oregon Department of Forestry said in a news release.

The department said visitors should check restrictions in effect for their destination before traveling on the Oregon State Parks website and follow fire safety tips to minimize the risk of campfires sparking larger blazes.
