A Salem man on Thursday was charged with murder in connection with a Wednesday shooting in northeast Salem.

Larry Ray Hatlestad, 43, was charged with second-degree murder and for being a felon in possession of a firearm in Marion County Circuit Court, according to court documents.

The charges allege Hatlestad shot and killed Abraham Torres-Borja, 29, and that he had a firearm on him after he was convicted of felony methamphetamine possession in 2013.

“Hatlestad was detained when a responding patrol officer located him trying to hide in a restaurant near the scene,” the Salem Police Department said in a Thursday news release. Witnesses helped officers search for Hatlestad along with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and Oregon State Police.

Hatlestad will be arraigned at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Marion County Circuit Court Annex.

The Salem Police Department responded around 11:15 a.m. to the 1000 block of 39th Avenue Northeast to a reported shooting, where they found a man with multiple gunshot wounds, a Wednesday news release said.

Torres-Borja was transported to Salem Hospital, where he died from his wounds.

The police department on Wednesday did not disclose the names of the victim or suspects but said several people had been detained. Officers closed multiple streets in the area to search for people who were involved.
