Salem police detective shoots man on Highway 22 during investigation

A Salem police detective shot and wounded a 22-year-old man Thursday evening on Highway 22 after the man rammed a police vehicle, Oregon State Police said in a news release.

Officers attempted to talk to the driver of a vehicle stopped at a gas station in the 5000 block of State Highway 22 as part of a shooting investigation, Salem police spokesman Lt. Treven Upkes said.

The driver fled and rammed a police car, OSP said. Salem police Detective Erick Hernandez fired at the vehicle around 7:30 p.m.

The vehicle stopped at the intersection of Highway 22 and Oak Grove Road, between west Salem and Rickreall. The driver, who police identified as Erfinson Bossy, 22, of Salem, was transported to the hospital with a non-life threatening gunshot wound, OSP said. A passenger in the vehicle fled and had not been found.

Salem police reported a shooting in the Englewood area of northeast Salem around 5:30 p.m. Thursday and said they had not yet arrested a suspect Thursday evening. Upkes said Friday he could not provide any details about that investigation or say whether Bossy was a suspect.

Hernandez has been placed on administrative leave and Oregon State Police are investigating the shooting.
