HEAT WAVE: Here’s where you can stay cool in the deadly heat this weekend

A list of Salem-area cooling centers published by ARCHES.

As a heat wave rolls through Salem this weekend, it’s important to stay hydrated, cool and out of the sun.

People can visit one of the city’s splash pads or jump in the river to escape the oppressive heat, expected to rise up to 108 degrees by Sunday.

It’s important not to leave your children or pets in the car. Emergency managers recommended pulling your blinds or shades closed and checking on your vulnerable neighbors.

Local governments and nonprofit agencies have put together a list of cooling centers around the county for those who don’t have access to air conditioning.

Marion County is also operating a call center from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday through Monday, for people who have questions or need help to cope with the heat wave. Call (503) 391-7294. Oregonians can also call 211 for state information about the heat wave.
