A three-story complex housing 21 apartments in northeast Salem burned Thursday night. Salem fire officials said no residents were injured. One injured firefighter is in stable condition and all displaced residents have temporary housing.

Governor mandates masks for all Oregon K-12 schools in fall 2021
Brown’s decision Thursday is an about-face from the state’s previous focus on local control for school in the fall. The mask rule applies to public and private schools, and state education officials said guidelines being developed would allow modifications for students with disabilities or medical conditions that make wearing masks difficult.

Marion County health officials are seeing a rise in breakthrough cases of the virus, where fully vaccinated people contract Covid, but nearly all such cases are mild. People who are unvaccinated account for 96% of Covid hospitalizations at Salem Health.
