Two dogs killed in east Salem shooting

Two dogs were killed in a shooting in east Salem Monday night in which several cars in a gas station parking lot near Northeast Clay and Cypress Streets were hit by bullets, Salem police said in a news release Tuesday.

Salem officers responded to a report of shots fired just after midnight and arrived to find a car speeding away.

The occupants of the car drove into a field in the 2800 block of Howell Prairie Road N.E. and fled on foot, police said.

Police didn’t find them after several hours of searching. Salem police had help from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, Keizer Police Department and Oregon State Police.

Five dogs in the back of one car were hit by bullets and were taken to an emergency veterinary clinic. Two died, according to police.

Police said none of the people inside the cars at the gas station were shot.
