PHOTOS: Drone images capture Capitol, cherry blossoms from up high

The Oregon Pioneer, also known as the Gold Man, has been gazing over downtown Salem since 1938.

He had some company from a drone as the sun came up on Tuesday, March 30. Jake Volz of Eagle Eye Droneography in McMinnville shared these images from his morning shoot.

The sculpture was crafted in New Jersey by sculptor Ulric Ellerhusen, who reportedly wanted to capture the pioneer spirit of those who settled the West. Ellerhusen intended the ax carried by the pioneer to be representative of those used to build a home.

The sculpture is bronze, gilded with gold.
