Salem should brace for new storm Friday night, forecasters say

The latest forecast Friday from the National Weather Service.

Freezing rain could continue to bedevil Salem over the next couple of days, according to the National Weather Service.

A winter storm warning remained in place for the Salem area until noon Friday for possible freezing rain around Salem and to the north. Accumulating ice of up to a quarter inch could occur in higher ground, the weather service said.

The Salem-Keizer School District said all school facilities would be closed on Friday, including grab-and-go meal sites. Distance learning will continue.

All state offices in Salem will be closed on Friday but employees already working remotely will be on duty, the state Department of Administrative Services said.

The weather service said more freezing rain had fallen in the Salem area overnight than expected and that that spotters reported .10 to .20 of an inch of ice at places about 250 feet.

The forecast includes a chance of freezing rain overnight Friday into Saturday, and again Saturday night into Sunday as a more potent storm swings through Oregon. Depending on how the storm tracks, Salem could get a couple of inches of snow.

“These types of systems are very challenging and ever changing,” forecasters wrote. “No matter the outcome, expecting widespread wintery precipitation which could create quite challenging travel conditions.”
