The memorial service for Selma Pierce, a well-known Salem community activist and retired dentist who died last week, will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12, at Salem First Christian Church.

Pierce’s husband, Dr. Bud Pierce, took to Facebook on Tuesday to announce the service, which will be streamed on the church’s webpage as well as on Facebook and YouTube. Selma Pierce had served as a deacon at the church where the couple worshiped.

Pierce, 66, died after being struck by a car Tuesday evening last week while walking on Doaks Ferry Road NW. No charges have been issued against the driver, who police say is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Salem police did not respond to a request for comment on the investigation’s status on Tuesday.

A two-time Republican candidate for Oregon House, Pierce’s death drew an outpouring of condolences from community members who recalled her long history of community service.

“Selma was an incomparable woman of dedication to her community possessing a true servants heart,” wild Pear Restaurant & Catering wrote on its Facebook page.  “We grieve deeply for her, her family and our community.”

Earlier the day Selma Pierce died, Bud Pierce announced his campaign for governor in 2022 as a Republican. Previously, Pierce ran unsuccessfully for governor in 2016. He has not announced any changes to his plans.
