Three died during hostage situation in east Salem

The Oregon State Police have identified three people killed in an east Salem shooting Monday afternoon during a hostage situation.

Deputies responded to a home on Juneva Place in east Salem around 12:30 p.m. Monday and tried to resolve a hostage situation with Jose Jesus Lopez-Tinoco, 34, of Woodburn, according to state police.

Deputies forced their way into the home after hearing gunshots. Inside they found Diari Bustos, 24, and an 11-year-old boy dead from gunshot wounds. They also found Lopez-Tinoco had died after shooting himself, police said.

Laura Rocio-Bustos, 43, was found with a gunshot wound and taken to the hospital with serious injuries. A 13-year-old boy was rescued from inside the home with no injuries, OSP said.

Police said Marion County deputy Ricky Kittelson fired an undermined number of rounds during the rescue. The release didn’t make it clear if Kittelson hit anyone with bullets and OSP spokesman Tim Fox didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.

Kittelson will be placed on administrative leave.

The Marion County Sheriff’s Office released information about the shooting on Monday but didn’t include details as to how many people were shot or how.

Lopez-Tinono pleaded guilty to interfering with an emergency vehicle in 2011 and was ordered to pay a $109 fine.
