People killed in east Salem Monday, sheriff’s office mum on details

Nearly a day after multiple people were killed in east Salem, the Marion County Sheriff’s Office continues to withhold details about how many people died and the role of police in the deaths.

In a Monday evening news release, spokesman Jeremy Landers said deputies went to a home on Southeast Juneva Place in east Salem Monday at 12:30 p.m. for a “possible hostage situation.”

In the release, Landers said “as the incident unfolded, shots were fired.” The release didn’t specify who fired the shots or if they struck anyone but described it as an “officer-involved shooting.”

He said the suspect was killed but didn’t identify the person.

Landers said Tuesday morning that police are trying to make sure relatives of those killed are contacted before any information is released. The investigation has been turned over to the Oregon State Police.

No deputies were injured, Landers said.
