Salem schools are getting ready for an online start to school with drive-by events where students can return library books, pick up needed supplies, meet teachers and dig through the lost and found.

Kalapuya Elementary in west Salem invited students to come out Sept. 3, with many kindergarteners thrilled to receive math workbooks and jump ropes as they prepare for their first year of school.

Teachers said the event helped them get excited for the upcoming year. Most Salem-Keizer elementary schools will hold similar events in the coming week.
