EXTRA CASH. An additional $300 a week is on its way to Oregonians collecting unemployment benefits. The Oregon Employment Department announced on Friday that its application was approved for a federal program intended to help make up the gap between what Oregonians’ are getting in unemployment benefits and their regular wage.

Oregon has been approved to make three weeks of payments retroactively that will be made to those receiving unemployment benefits between July 26 and Aug. 15, according to the department.

It’s not clear how long the additional payments will be extended and when they’ll be made. But the department notes they may be extended from three to five weeks and possibly longer depending on the availability of funding.

NEW EATS. The Chicken Shack Keizer, located at 3844 River Rd. N. in Keizer, had its grand opening on Saturday. The new eatery describes itself on Facebook as “a quick-serve restaurant that sells jumbo chicken fingers, jumbo chicken wings and fries, along with offering over 30 sauce varieties!”

LIGHTS OUT. Northern Lights Theatre Pub, a place where Salem could enjoy a beer with a movie located at 3893 Commercial St S.E. Will be closing for good after 16 years.

Marion County is currently in the second phase of the state’s reopening plan, which allows movie theaters to reopen. The theater had limited screenings of older movies including “The Wizard of Oz” and films from the “Harry Potter” series. But on Saturday, it announced on Facebook that the theater would be closing after an impasse with its landlord.

FUTURE OF WORK. Patrick O’Connor, a regional economist with the Employment Department, will give a virtual presentation titled “A Look at the Mid-Valley and Future Workforce Needs” during a work session for Chemeketa Community College’s board of education. The presentation will be held via Zoom on Wednesday, Sept. 2. The meeting begins at 1 p.m. and the presentation is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. More information can be found on the board’s website.
