Hey, Salem, prepare for blustery, wet weather Monday into Tuesday

Heavy rain – up to two inches – and gusty winds could hit Salem late Monday into Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service said one of the most potent storms of the season is rolling towards Oregon from the Gulf of Alaska.

The Weather Service said in its Sunday morning forecast that the track of the storm into the Willamette Valley wasn’t certain but the central and southern portions “have the better chance to experience winds strong enough to cause damage to trees and power lines.”

For Salem, the service said winds could gust to 43 mph overnight Monday into Tuesday.

“The rain could be heavy at times” as well, the service said in its forecast. “Rainfall rates may be sufficient to result in urban and small stream flooding.”

UPDATE 3 P.M. SUNDAY: The weather service has issued a flood watch from 4 a.m. Tuesday until 4 p.m. Wednesday. “Periods of heavy rain starting Monday afternoon through Tuesday will result in sharp rises on many rivers and creeks across Northwest Oregon and Southwest Washington, and minor flooding is possible,” the service said Sunday afternoon. “Landslides and debris flows are possible during this flood event.”
