A Salem man is in custody for attempted murder after shooting a Salem police officer in a drive by shooting in the early hours of Friday morning.

Salem police officer Angus “Scotty” Emmons was treated and released after a gunman drove up to his car at around 3:20 a.m. Friday, July 17, and fired several shots into the vehicle, hitting Emmons in the arm, around 3:20 a.m.

Emmons, a 21-year veteran at the department, drove himself to the emergency room, according to a police statement.

Police said they tracked the suspect, Alejandro Maciel-Salcedo, 27, to a home in 1200 block of Southeast Waller Street, near Bush’s Pasture Park.

Salem’s SWAT team and the Oregon State Police SWAT team surrounded the central Salem home and Maciel-Salcedo peacefully surrendered around 1:40 p.m.

Maciel-Salcedo is charged with three counts of second-degree attempted murder, three counts of unlawful use of a weapon, first-degree assault, two counts of first-degree attempted assault and for being a felon in possession of a weapon.

Maciel-Salcedo previously pled guilty to first-degree burglary, unlawful use of a weapon, menacing and fourth-degree assault in August last year and was sentenced to 90 days in jail and three years of probation.

In December, he violated his probation by going to his victim’s home.

Salem Police Chief Jerry Moore said he was relieved Emmons wasn’t hurt worse.

“I’m relieved Det. Emmons wasn’t more seriously injured, and proud of the manner in which our officers resolved this matter. They showed great patience and restraint during an emotionally charged incident and successfully took the suspect into custody without injury to anyone else involved,” he said in a statement.
