Salem police officer shot, gunman eludes arrest

A Salem police officer was shot early Friday morning and the gunman is being sought by police, the Salem Police Department announced.

The officer, who was not identified, was being treated for injuries not considered to be life threatening, according to a police press release. The agency released no details about the shooting but said there now was “no threat to the public.”

The westbound lanes of Southeast Mission Street between 22nd and 17th streets were closed and would be so for several hours, police said. Drivers are asked to find another route into Salem.

Police were asking that anyone who saw or heard activity on Mission Street at 17th Street contact police at 503-588-8477.

In a related development, police have blocked Northeast 13th Street at Hines Street “due to police activity in the area,” the press release said.

This is a developing story.
