SALEM IN NEED: A nonprofit working with seniors shifts its operations online and is asking for help

Friends of Center 50+ supports the programs and services offered through the Center 50+, a nonprofit that provides life-enriching opportunities for adults 50 and older through activities, services, and involvement in the community.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Center 50+ was forced to close March 16. In hopes of combating isolation and loneliness as well as supporting health and wellness, seniors are being referred to the Center’s outreach programming. The programming includes Friendly Caller (daily/weekly reassurance call and welfare checks) and the Friendship Brigade (outreach to frail elders living in community care settings). In addition, seniors not normally concerned about access to food are finding themselves in an unfamiliar situation.  They may not be unable to access important nutrition or personal care items. Center 50+ has partnered with United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley, to facilitate food and supply home delivery.

In addition, the Center now offers virtual options to reach patrons. Each day at 10 a.m. the nonprofit provides fitness demos on Facebook Live. They offer acrylics, computer classes, history courses, and a book club through online meeting platforms. They even offer free phone bingo through Facebook Live.

Needs for Center50+ now:

Toilet paper and cleaning supplies can be delivered to the Center Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Although the building is closed to the public, donors can call 503-588-6349.

In addition, the nonprofit is seeking personal stories, fictional stories, poetry, pictures, and words of encouragement (sent to [email protected]) as a way for seniors to connect with the outside world.

Cash donations can be mailed to 2615 Portland Rd. NE

Salem, Oregon 97301 or be made online at [email protected].
