SALEM IN NEED: Family Building Blocks stepping up for vulnerable families

Family Building Blocks of Salem is continuing to provide help to area families during the pandemic. The nonprofit urges those who want to find out what help is available to call 971-301-1003. (Submitted photo)

Family Building Blocks live by the mission to “Keep Children Safe and Families Together.” The nonprofit works to prevent child abuse and neglect by working with families with young children (under the age of six) who have the greatest need for support.

The nonprofit provides critical and voluntary services at no cost to some of the most vulnerable families in Salem.

Due to quarantine restrictions, Family Building Blocks has found it more challenging to serve children and families. According to board member Rob Kansky, the nonprofit is facing new and unexpected costs associated with providing urgent, additional support to families.

With unstable housing, food insecurity, social isolation, and limited access to medical care, the toxic overload of these factors can lead to increased substance abuse, family violence, and untreated mental health problems.

Unfortunately, this threatens the health and development of the most vulnerable children and their families.

Family Building Blocks continue working to ensure the most vulnerable are able to make it through this period of health risks, isolation, and lack of access to resources.  Their therapeutic classroom teachers, home visitors, and support staff are conducting visits remotely and reaching out to families.

Meantime, the nonprofit canceled three of its largest in-person fundraisers and pivoted to virtual events. “Uncorked Revelry” will combine with “Uncorked Live” for the first-ever virtual event on Saturday, May 16, with an online silent auction leading up to the event. People can RSVP here: https://familybuildingblocks.org/events/#uncorkedlive.

Currently, the nonprofit needs food, hygiene items, cleaning supplies, and diapers are the most needed items. Staff is available at Chelsea’s Place, Monday-Friday between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. to accept donations. Needed items can be shipped directly through their Amazon wish list at http://a.co/9CEMFRS
