Salem wants your sewing skills.

Salem city officials Friday put a call out for residents with the time and supplies to produce and drop off handmade masks using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s instructions next week.

The masks will be donated to local nonprofits and social service organizations.

The city’s ask comes as the CDC has released new guidelines, suggesting that everyone wear masks when going outside.

There are three drop-off sites where the city will collect masks from Wednesday, April 15, through Friday, April 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Seamstresses can drop the masks off at the State Fairgrounds by entering at Northeast Silverton Road and Lana Avenue, Woodmansee Park by entering at Southeast Sunnyside Road and Keglers Lane, or the West Salem Library by entering through the parking lot behind Roth’s Fresh Markets and proceeding north to Northeast Taybin Road.

Two weeks ago, so many Salem residents showed up to pick up mask kits distributed by Salem Health that they ran out in the first half-hour of what was supposed to be two-day giveaway.

The following week, people returned nearly all the masks completed – 10,942 of them.
