UPDATE: Salem man turns himself into police after Tuesday’s fatal hit and run in south Salem

Update: 3/6 10:29 a.m.: A Salem man turned himself into police Thursday after hitting and killing a pedestrian while driving on Southeast McGilchrist Tuesday night.

Jerry Lee McKennan, 48, told police he leaned over to pick up his cell phone while driving and didn’t realize he hit a person until the following day when he noticed damage to his car and read about the crash.

McKennan was charged with criminally negligent homicide and for failing to perform the duties of a driver to injured persons and booked in the Marion County jail.

UPDATE 3/4 4:10 p.m.: Police identified 44-year-old Mario Lopez-Lopez, of Salem, as the man killed in Tuesday night’s crash.

A man died in a hit and run accident in south Salem Tuesday night, the Salem Police Department said Wednesday.

Around 11:29 p.m., the man was walking his bike along the shoulder of Southeast McGilchrist Street near Southeast 22nd Street when a car hit him and left the scene without stopping, Salem police Lt. Debbie Aguilar said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police are working to identify the man’s family members.

McGilchrist Street was shut down for several hours while police investigated the crash.  Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the police department’s tip line at 503-588-8477.
