A Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist is performing at Willamette University Wednesday evening.
Theo Bleckmann and pianist-composer Dan Tepfer will perform a mix of dark and political songs from a pre-World War II period as well as sections from their own esoteric jazz song books.
The concert is on Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Hudson Hall on 900 State St. Tickets cost $25 and can be purchased online.
Diane Trevett-Sedoruk, a music assistant at Willamette University, said Bleckmann uses live electronic looping to transform his voice.
“It’s just really creative and different,” she said.
The duo will perform music ranging from composers like Kurt Weill, Hans Eisler and Schubert to more contemporary bands like Massive Attack.
Trevett-Sedoruk said Bleckmann taught a class for the university’s jazz students on Tuesday.
“It gives them a really great opportunity to learn from professionals that are out there touring, performing and creating music,” she said.
Bleckmann’s visit is part of the Grace Goudy Distinguished Artists Series, which brings world-renowned musicians to Salem every year for performances and residency activities including master classes, student composers’ readings and classroom presentations.
