Pedestrian killed while crossing Front Street near Riverfront Park

A Salem resident died while trying to cross Front Street in front of Riverfront Park just before 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to Salem Police Department.

Northbound Northeast Front and Commercial Streets will remain closed up to Chemeketa Street while officers investigate the crash over the next few hours, police said. State Street from Northeast Commercial Street to Northeast Front Street is also closed.

The driver of a black Ford Explorer was leaving the Riverfront Carousel parking lot when they hit the pedestrian headed away from the park, according to Salem Police Department spokesperson Debbie Aguilar.

Witnesses provided first aid to the person, but they were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators are working to identify the pedestrian and next of kin.

The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with investigators. No arrests have been made, police said.
