West Salem land purchase on the table for Salem-Keizer school board

A half-million dollar land purchase near West Salem High School is among the items Salem-Keizer school board members will consider at their Tuesday meeting.

Board members will hear a proposal to buy a 1.3 acre property at 1755 Doaks Ferry Road for about $500,000. The property is a single home east of the West Salem campus which district staff want to acquire because of planned school construction.

The board will vote on the purchase at an Oct. 22 meeting.

Board members will also consider proclamations for disability employment awareness month and in support of a world without abuse and violence.

They’ll approve grants and contracts, including more than $15 million from the federal government, mostly for supporting schools with a high percentage of students living in poverty. The grants also include $10.5 million from the state for high school dropout prevention and career technical education programs.

School district executives will update the board on community engagement efforts underway to determine how Salem-Keizer will spend Student Success Act funding and share an annual report Salem-Keizer’s Head Start preschool program.

Before the regular session, the board will meet in executive session at 5 p.m. to discuss labor negotiations and property transactions. Executive sessions are closed to the public.

Meeting details: 6 p.m. Tuesday, October 8 at the district’s Support Services Center, 2575 Commercial Street SE.

Board members: Kathy Goss, Sheronne Blasi, Marty Heyen, Jesse Lippold, Paul Kyllo, Satya Chandragiri and Danielle Bethell.
