Brush fire burning off Reed Road in southeast Salem

Update 6 p.m.: Forward progress of the 30-acre grass fire has stopped and crews are securing lines and putting out fires within the fire area.

Salem-area firefighters are battling a brush fire that started Monday afternoon off Reed Road in southeast Salem, near the intersection with Battle Creek Road.

Reed Road is closed as firefighters work to contain the flames. Smoke was visible from the road.

The fire is near the now-defunct Fairview Training Center, the former state hospital for Oregonians with developmental disabilities.

Firefighters with Salem, Marion County, Turner, Jefferson and Aumsville were on scene.

At least six engines responded to the blaze, which was reported around 3:15 p.m.
