Good evening, Salem.

A federal judge on Tuesday halted the proposed merger between grocery giants Kroger, which owns Fred Meyer, and Albertsons, which owns Safeway.

The Oregonian/OregonLive reported the order would "effectively torpedo the deal" as a Federal Trade Commission proceeding plays out. The merger would create a $200 billion company with about 5,000 stores in nearly every state. Several states have challenged the deal over concerns about the impact on grocery prices and on workers.
