Good evening, Salem.

Earlier today, the city of Salem released the results on a poll which found that, at this point in time, Salem voters would likely reject either of two levy options favored by council as ways to fill the city’s budget deficit.

Over 400 Salem voters were asked to consider a “livability levy” focusing on libraries, Center 50+ and parks, or a public safety levy funding police, fire and emergency response.

The poll found that most in Salem aren’t willing to pay more taxes to fund city services.

That means the 2025 budget cycle is likely to again include painful city cuts and emotional meetings. Salem Reporter will follow the process closely and keep you informed as city leaders weigh options for balancing the budget.

That starts Monday, when city councilors will discuss the poll's findings and next steps.
