Starting next summer, it won't be free to park on streets in downtown Salem.
The city of Salem for years has been working on plans to end free downtown parking. It's supposed to encourage use of parkades, fund security improvements and allow the phase-out of a business tax downtown that currently pays for parking infrastructure.
City councilors approved the move last year. Now, city officials have set a target date of July 2025 and are surveying people about how they park downtown and related issues to guide the rollout.
Nearly every school in Salem and Keizer improved attendance last year. But 44% of local students remain chronically absent, challenging efforts to improve literacy and graduation rates.
Events in Salem this week include the start of holiday celebrations at the Oregon State Fairgrounds, a choral performance of Mozart and a market dedicated to handmade ceramics.
