Good evening, Salem.

Six developers have submitted plans to develop one of Salem's last remaining vacant downtown blocks.

The Urban Development Department is reviewing plans for the city-owned "Block 45," a 1.1 acre block which sits next to Pringle Creek and Riverfront Park in south downtown. Applications closed Nov. 5, and the city expects to announce a finalist in 2025.

City officials declined to give Salem Reporter the names of developers who applied, saying they are still reviewing plans and that details of applications are confidential until the city completes selection.

We've filed a public records request for the proposals and will keep you posted as we learn more about major plans for Salem's development.

Here's some of today's news. You can read all our latest coverage anytime on our website.

Here’s how our 2023 effort turned out: Shopping in Salem – where to go for unique local gifts this season

We will publish a guide to local retailers on Friday, Nov. 29. There is no cost for participation, but here’s what we need from your business:

  1. Name, address, hours, phone, website
  2. One gift item described + price – 3 sentences or so.
  3. If possible, a photo of the gift.
  4. Item should be in stock at your store
  5. Gift certificates – do you offer them?

To have your item included, send an email to [email protected] by noon Monday, Nov. 25.

So, Salem business owners, tell shoppers: What have you got?
